These situations can create so much distress that one's functioning at
home, work, school. or socially can become imparired. Therefore, it is
good to know of services which can provide the appropriate support and
assistance to help individuals resolve or reduce conflicts.
| What's the difference between counseling and therapy? |
- Counseling is giving advise, pointing out alternatives, helping to set goals, and providing needed information
- Psychotherapy is a more specialized and formal therapeutic
interaction between a licensed mental health professional and client
(individual, couple, family or goup). The therapeutic alliance is
established to resolve symptoms of an emotional or mental illness,
psychosocial stress, relationship problems and difficulties in coping.
It is not a "quick fix" and requires effort and commitment from the
client. The psychotherapist has expertise in one or more psychodynamic
intervention techniques that are based on knowledge, skills, experience
and research.
